The American Pain Foundation (APF) is an independent nonprofit 501(c)3 organization serving people affected by pain through information, advocacy, and support. Its mission is to improve the quality of life of people with pain by raising public awareness, providing practical information, promoting research, and advocating to remove barriers and increase access to effective pain management.
Program Description
Fatality due to unintentional overdose of prescription opioids is a significant problem in the United States. This is the result of a professional practice gap, whereby clinicians are either not aware of the prevalence of the problem, do not understand the major risk factors for unintentional overdose deaths, or do not know how to minimize risk when treating patients with chronic pain. This APF initiative is designed to educate clinicians to minimize prescription opioid overdose through a series of 1-hour, live, interactive teleconference/webinar programs.
The activity has been planned in accordance with the need to educate health care professionals on strategies for improving assessment, treatment, and management of individuals with chronic pain to minimize unintentional prescription opioid overdose.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
1. Describe the prevalence and demographics of overdose deaths from prescription opioids in the United States, together with the major risk factors for unintentional overdose deaths
2. Employ “Six practices for safe opioid prescribing” while treating chronic pain to minimize the risk of overdose deaths from prescription opioids
3. Identify tools to help them integrate these practices into their care of patients
4. Integrate “Clinical Guidelines on Prescribing Opioids for Treatment of Pain” into their practice
